From : Sojourn #12, page 1
June Brigman is most recognized for her art on Marvel's Power Pack and Barbie in the late 1980's, as well as the Brenda Starr Reporter newspaper strip. She seemed an unconventional choice for a fill-in issue of Sojourn, her art almost too polite for a book whose themes are conquest and vengeance.

I had just finished a year on Sojourn with Greg Land, and I was redefining my role at Crossgen as Relief Inker (A cool name hatched by the CG gang to do away with the unpleasant term 'fill-in inker'). This gave me the availability to ink Way of The Rat, Negation and other books I enjoyed. Oddly enough, my first fill-in, uh, I mean, 'relief' issue would be the very next issue of Sojourn!

Since I had worked with Greg for years before Sojourn, I was very familiar with his rendering style.

It was good timing to put me on this issue to keep the look of the characters "on model", and maintain the look of the series. This is an occasional sourse of controversy: How far does an inker bury the work without stepping over the line, disrespecting the penciller? In this case, June provided solid layouts and storytelling, but the actual finished art was a tad too simple in contrast to the other CG titles. Arwyn, Gareth et al had Disneyesque feature as you'll see in subsequent pages. It's not like I put Plastino/Anderson heads over Kirby Jimmy Olsen figures (no one under 30 will get that line).

At the risk of pidgeonholing, June's style seemed more suited for the open-air tales of Sephie in Meridian (which I also inked her on, retaining more of the original intent of her pencils).

BTW, the pencilled crosshatch lines at the top of Mordath's head were added by me as a guideline for a slight shadowy fade.

What can I say? Bring on the detail! Added more grit using croquill scratches and jabs.

Panel 1, a little drybrush on the smoke

Panel 2, June gave Mordath nice craggy hands, needing only a manicure from me. She gave him long fingernails in the opening sequence, even though he never had them previously. I added some additional scratches to his hands and more texture to the wooden flagpole

Panel 3, more of the above inking additions plus:

Grease pencil (China marker) on certain highlights of Mordath stonelike features, as Greg had me do on previous issues. More scratches and craggy areas on Mordath's face and hands. I liked how June hinted at the chain mail under his raised hand, so I added thin linear fades that close into black.

On the torn parts of Mordath's tunic a shreaded, stringy look was accented.
